Dragon Ball Film Reviews: The Trunks Duology
Wow, this is the quickest upload I think I've ever done! Then again, it is over only like 90 minutes of material. Regardless, today we'll look at what I call the Trunks Duology, featuring Super Android 13 and Bojack Unbound. ...yes, I know I'm skipping a film, we'll get back to it.
As always these are my own opinions, yours are just as good, and no one is right or wrong. Also, I am reviewing the Japanese versions but using some dub terminology just to drive you insane. Let's go.
SUPER ANDROID 13/ EXTREME BATTLE!! THE THREE GREAT SUPER SAIYANS
Our film starts with a nicely reanimated scene of Gero dying, revealing his back up plan: a giant computer and three new androids; 13, 14, and 15. Androids 14 and 15 attack Goku while the gang is out shopping, and to avoid causalities the fight is moved to the Arctic. Well Trunks, Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo fight off 14, 15, and the newly arrived 13, but they can not gain the upper hand until the 3 Saiyans go Super. They manage to defeat 14 and 15, but before they can celebrate 13 absorbs the remains of 14 and 15, becoming Super 13! ...he also becomes blue for some reason. Well, Super 13 lays the beat down on everyone and all hope seems lost until Goku absorbs a Genki Dama and punches Super 13 once. Then Super 13 explodes! ...convenient. Our movie ends with our heroes healing in a hospital, and Piccolo and Vegeta hanging out together in the arctic.
So this movie is pretty decent, but not a lot to it. It's fun to watch, but leaves little to no impact. The villains are interesting to watch, but say hardly anything, the plot is just a fight scene, and the characters aren't given much time to shine. Still, excellent animation, great music, and a well choreographed fight helps this movie out a lot. It's essentially a mindless popcorn flick.
BOJACK UNBOUND/ THE GALAXY AT THE BRINK!! THE SUPER INCREDIBLE GUY
This movie starts with Goku dead! ...that was fast. Well, being dead, Goku watches t.v. of Gohan fighting in a tournament, because nothing screams riveting like a Dragon Ball character watching Dragon Ball! So Gohan, Trunks, random sumo guy, and somehow Krillin all make it past the preliminaries, meaning that they get to go up against special galactic warriors. The only problem is, the galactic warriors have been replaced by Bojack and his band of Space Pirates! ...it's not as interesting as it sounds. So after killing off random sumo guy, Bojack's team starts fighting our heroes. Even Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Vegeta join in on the fight, but Bojack and his team defeats all of them. Well, right when Gohan is about to be killed by Bojack, Goku breaks all sorts of rules and Instant Transmissions to Earth to save Gohan... and call him a spoiled baby for not winning! ...wow, Goku, what a dick. After being forced to return to the Other World, Goku watches as Gohan, inspired by his fathers belittling of him, goes Super Saiyan 2 and handily destroys Bojack and his minions. Healing in the hospital, Gohan looks out the window to see a creepy, giant, disembodied head of Goku staring at him in the sky. Scary. And with that, our film wraps up with a montage of Gohan's life up to this point.
This movie is pretty good, though I feel it's a bit over rated. Bojack and his men are pretty useless, and barely say anything. Most we get is that he's more evil than King Piccolo, which isn't saying much considering they're past Cell at this point. Also, the plot is pretty thin. Still, the fact that this film bucks many Z film conventions and even let's Gohan be the star is great, and you can do a lot worse than this movie.
FINAL THOUGHTS
These two films are quite good, though pretty forgettable as stories. I call them the Trunks Duology, but the name is really just because Future Trunks is featured in both, and his quest to save his future is a minor subplot in both. I would recommend watching both films to Dragon Ball fans, but only as mindless, forgettable entertainment. It's essentially junk food for Dragon Ball fans.
Next time... we hit the Trilogy I have been dreading all along. We take a step back, then two leaps forward with this monstrosity of a Trilogy. So Kakarot your Kakarot and Kakarot your Kakarot as we deal with the man, the myth, the Hulk in space himself, with the Broly Trilogy. Dende help us all...
