Dragon Ball Film Reviews: The Broly Trilogy
So... it has come to this. I'll be honest, I've been dreading reviewing Broly for multiple reasons, not least of which being the odd amount of love Broly has from the Dragon Ball community. But I promised to review all of them, so here we are. Just be warned, I do not like Broly nearly as much as others. Let's get this over with...
As always, remember that this is just MY opinion. If you love Broly and think everything he's in is awesome... well, you will not enjoy my reviews, but your opinion is as valid as mine. Well, I've put this off long enough...
BROLY: THE LEGENDARY SUPER SAIYAN/ BURN UP!! A RED-HOT, RAGING, SUPER-FIERCE FIGHT
...that is a long title, Japan. Anyways, this film starts with Goku and Chi-Chi heading to some sort of school meeting thing for Gohan. Goku is not having fun. Meanwhile, the rest of the crew is hanging out at some party thing where Krillin is singing. Vegeta is not having fun. And then a Saiyan named Paragas lands to tell Vegeta that he made a NEW planet Vegeta for him. Vegeta obviously is down for being king, so takes off with Paragas with Trunks, Gohan, Krillin, Oolong, and Roshi following to make sure he's safe. While on the new planet Vegeta, our heroes, and Goku who followed them later on orders of King Kai, meet Broly, Paragas' son. Oh, and a bunch of slaves, but no one seems to care. Eventually, the evil plan of Paragas is revealed, and the long, stupid, convoluted backstory for Broly is laid out. Essentially, Goku and Broly were in the nursery together, but Goku cried, making Broly sad. Now, 40 years later, Broly is out for Goku's blood! ...ugh. Well, the fight starts. And it's a cool fight, but Paragas keeps blabbing about his evil plan during it to Vegeta, who is wussing out. And then Piccolo shows up, because of reasons. Well, Broly seems to have won, until everyone gives Goku their power, allowing Goku to punch Broly, making him explode! The movie ends with everyone leaving the planet before it is destroyed, and Chi-Chi fainting.
Yeah, I'm sorry Broly fans, but I think this movie sucks. While the animation, music, and action IS some of the best Z has ever seen, it get's throttled to death by a long, convoluted plot that makes little sense and an under-developed character with a ridiculous back story. I can't really recommend this film, but it's not the worst film in this trilogy. Ugh...
BROLY: SECOND COMING/ THE DANGEROUS DUO! SUPER-WARRIORS CAN'T REST
This movie starts with... Dragon Ball hunting? Huh, been a while since Dragon Balls were in a Dragon Ball film... Regardless, Goten, Trunks, and Videl are searching for the Dragon Balls and come across a village that is about to sacrifice a young girl to some sort of beast. Of course our heroes volunteer to defeat this beast, and it turns out the beast was just a goofy dinosaur. So they kill it and eat it! ...wow. Well, at one point Goten started crying, and unknowingly awoke Broly, who had somehow gotten better from the whole explosion thing and landed on Earth. So the next day, Broly attacks! Videl is taken out quickly, Gohan senses Broly and takes off to where the three are, but for most of the fight, it's goofy Goten and Trunks antics! Including two separate peeing scenes! Wow! One time it's literally on Broly's head, too! Well, eventually Gohan shows up, and Goten and Trunks are taken out. So now it's Gohan and Broly.. for a minute or two, then Broly falls into some lava. Then Piccolo saves Gohan, but then he morphs into Krillin, just in time to be made a fool of when Broly jumps out of the lava. Lovely. Well, Gohan is being beaten up pretty badly, so Videl tries one last bout of help, only to be knocked out by Broly, angering Gohan enough to fight even harder. Goten wakes up and helps his brother, wishing to himself that Shen Long could help. And then Goku somehow shows up, helps defeat Broly with a three way Kamehameha, and then disappears while the Dragon Balls separate despite never having been used. Even the narrator was confused. And so our film ends with Krillin being forgotten and left to die. Lovely.
Yeah, this movie is pretty bad. It's tone is inconsistent, it's story absurd, the fight scene is lacking, and Broly barely makes an appearance in his own film. Add in an ending that not even the narrator can figure out, and you've got yourself a mess of a movie. Easily the worst movie of this trilogy. But we do indeed have one more film... ugh.
BIO-BROLY/ SUPER-WARRIOR DEFEAT!! I'M THE ONE WHO'LL WIN
So... where do I even begin here? Well, we start with 18 shaking down Mr. Satan for the money he promised her for taking a dive in the tournament when a guy shows up to challenge Mr. Satan on a remote island. 18 goes to make sure he pays her, and Goten and Trunks go too so that we can have a plot. On this island we get some basic fights, some lame comedy, and a stupid explanation as too how Broly is there. Oh yeah, Broly is there, and he's naked! But he's a clone or something? I don't know, it's weird. Well, Broly gets covered in sludge for some odd reason, and starts wreaking the lab, killing hundreds of people just doing their job. Eventually, this weird Broly clone thing is defeated by Trunks tricking him. Seems about right. But the movie isn't over, because the evil sludge is spreading through the island, killing everyone, and will cover the world! Until water saves the world! Not kidding, water destroys the sludge. So with a final Kamehameha Goten, Trunks, and Krillin who just kinda showed up blasts water over the island, saving the world. After a stupid fake out, our film ends with Goku's cameo and a montage of Goten and Trunks growing up.
Again, this movie is not good. At all. Still, it's a little better than Second coming in that the tone was consistent. Broly says one thing in this movie... and only AFTER he dies! How does that make sense?! Only watch this movie for completion sake, if at all.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Broly, why are you so popular? I have watched these films about 5 times total now (Only this time in Japanese), and I still don't get it. Yes, the concept, design, and fighting in the first film are cool, but the character just SUCKS! He acts like the Hulk, but a more mindless, single minded Hulk, which is really sad considering the potential the idea had. Luckily, Toei has recycled the basic concept and appearance of Broly for a new character in Super, Kale. So far, Kale has been a much more interesting and fleshed out character than her inspiration, and that is fine by me. I want to see more of Kale, but I've seen Broly more than enough for one lifetime. But what of the Trilogy? It SUCKS! I'm sorry, but these three are some of the worst in the series. I still think Return of Cooler is the worst film so far, but these three are down there with it. I will say that my feelings of the films are not because of Broly as a character. You could have replaced Broly with anyone in the last 2 films, and they still suck. I like Dead Zone, but I think Garlic Jr. is a weak villain as a whole, and I hate Return of Cooler, but I think Cooler is one of the better Z villains. My point is that despite Broly, a weak character in my opinion, is in these three films, they don't suck BECAUSE he's in them. ...not that his presence helps them...
But enough of Broly, it's time to move on with the end of an era. Next time we look at the final 3 movies released for 17 years. ...hope that isn't a bad sign... Well, guess we'll find out! So get read to fuse, survive the wrath, and follow the path to power for when we next meet I'll review what I call the Ending Trilogy! ...you know, because it's the final 3 movies for 17 years. Makes sense.
